Reading Discovery

Reading Discovery is a family literacy program which aims to educate parents of children aged birth to five years old about the vital role they play in developing the early literacy skills of their children; and the learning readiness of their children by school age.

The goal of the Reading Discovery Program is:

• To increase children’s early literacy skills, social inclusion and emotional development
• To improve parent/child interactions and promote healthy attachments
• To increase the integration of families and children into services within their community
• To maximise learning readiness before commencing school - active listening, sustained
concentration and curiosity

There are two delivery methods of the Reading Discovery Program.

Home Visits

This consists of weekly one hour visits to a family’s home.
In these visits, the Reading Discovery practitioner or volunteer will help parents support their children’s learning through reading books, nursery rhymes, singing and story-play.

Beyond the Rainbow Story-play Playgroup

This is similar to the home visits, however is delivered through a supported playgroup environment. Playgroup sessions are currently run out of the Total Learning Centre located at Mildura Primary School (senior site).
